Out of my comfort zone and onto the NW ridge of Tozal del Cartujo

This is my version of a day scrambling I had in the Sierra Nevada on the NW ridge of Tozal del Cartujo. Thankfully I was in the competent company of Richard, Felipe and Andrew, who all helped to keep me calm, make me laugh and make me feel confident. Yes I can do it.

The four of us met in Lanjaron and drove to the ski centre above Granada to catch the gondola to the middle station and then the chair lift to below Veleta (in July and August the ski chair lifts are open and give you a … Read the rest

What night time visitors do we get in the garden?

Have you ever wondered what night time visitors you get in your garden? Well I did, I know we have them, they leave evidence behind, some more so than others! So I set up a camera trap that I’m lucky to have and hope never to have stolen.

wild boar

The original idea of having the camera trap was to locate where my Booted Eagle was nesting and attach it near there (obviously before nesting season so as not to disturb them), but that is still work in progress. In the meantime to learn how to use this I set it up … Read the rest

Sunset – the ever changing colours of the sky over Lanjaron

As you know living here in the Alpujarras, the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains, we are often treated to spectacular sunsets over Lanjaron (the gateway to the Alpujarras). March 8th was one of those evenings that didn’t disappoint. I took so many photos I thought I would share some of the forever changing colours. I have collected photos of the skies here for quite a number of years, you can view them at this link.

Siberian Huskys need our help – Urgent action required

Watch the 2 videos and then please take a minute to email the address below. This is another sad situation that some dogs find themselves in through no fault of their own. We need to add pressure to the authorities to actually do something about this other than kill the dogs. The Spanish Kennel Club and SEPRONA say there is nothing wrong with the conditions. People power worked with Bear Bear, lets make it work again for these beautiful dogs.

Close call with fire

Last night as we left the house about 8pm we saw the unmistakable sight of smoke billowing down the mountain side, can mean only one thing at this time of year, FIRE! Luckily for us it was on the mountain opposite so our house would never have been in trouble unless the fire came down very low and jumped the valley but some of our friends live on that mountain. We reached the intended bar and found our friends in their, told them (they had no idea a fire was going on), so they left and went home, one of … Read the rest

Spain win Euro 2008!

Yes, 44 years is a long time since Spain last won a major tournament (42 years since England last won a trophy!).

Anyway, Spain deservedly won Euro 2008 last night beating the dogged Germans 1-0. We were in our local bar in Lanjaron, the Flower Bar. As you can imagine the whole place went mad!

Fantastic for the country and what a good team they have. They never sat back on the lead they had and were always pushing forward trying to score again. In these days of defensive coaches the way they played was most refreshing to see (England … Read the rest

Hot Hot Hot

The weather here in Spain is set to sore to silly temperatures for the next few weeks. The met office have issued weather warnings, we here in Lanjaron will be seeing 36/37/38 degs C everyday. In the citys they are expecting temperatures of over 40 degs C. Looks like its time to dig the shutters for the windows out to keep the house dark and help keep it cool, keep the pool topped up for us and the dogs and prey for the veggies!… Read the rest
