Lanjaron is known as the gateway to the Alpujarras and is located at 650m in the foothills of Spain’s Sierra Nevada. The World Health Organization has recognized Lanjaron as one of the places with the greatest longevity on the planet. It is indeed the quality of its waters – together with the climate, the pure mountain air and the Mediterranean diet – that allows many of its citizens to live more than one hundred years. The spa baths have been the most important mineral-medicinal waters of Andalucia since the 18th century when its healing properties were discovered. On 23rd June people come from all over the country and world to take part in the biggest water fight in Spain possibly the world. It starts at middnight and for one hour the streets are full with people and their buckets, water pistols, fire hoses and lorries filled with water.
